Inside Horseshoe Bay Resort: The Ultimate Texas Golf Getaway
A Weekend That Felt Way Longer Than It Was
There’s something about getting out of Houston and into the Hill Country that just resets everything.
We headed out to Horseshoe Bay Resort for a weekend trip, and it ended up being one of those getaways that feels way longer than it actually is. Golf, food, views, and just enough going on to keep it interesting the entire time.
Friday: Apple Rock Sets the Tone
We got in Friday and went straight to Apple Rock Golf Course.
Checked out their new pro shop first, which is really well done but definitely would have hoped for a bigger selection of merch. The range alone is worth mentioning. You’re hitting out over the Hill Country with elevation everywhere. It doesn’t feel like a typical warm-up.
Then I teed it up.
Apple Rock ended up being my favorite course of the trip. It’s just a really clean layout with a good mix of holes and visuals. Nothing feels repetitive, and you actually remember shots out there.
Checking In: Lake Views and a Proper Setup
After the round, we checked into the hotel and got hooked up with a corner suite overlooking the lake.
Room was massive. One of those setups where you walk in and immediately think, yeah this is going to be a good weekend.
Later that night, we got picked up in an Escalade and shuttled over to Waterfront Bar & Grill for dinner.
The chef brought out a few tasting specials which made it even better. Had a Denver steak that was really solid, but the highlight was easily the duck fried rice. Didn’t expect that to be the best thing on the table, but it was. Finished it off with an apple galette.
Saturday: Ram Rock Will Test You
Saturday morning we teed it up at Ram Rock Golf Course, and this one is no joke.
Out of all three courses, this is easily the toughest. It’s tight, there’s a ton of elevation change, and you actually have to think your way around the course. Not unfair by any means, but it definitely makes you earn it. Even playing it around 6,800 yards, it felt like a grind in a good way.
I’ve heard the same feedback from a few buddies who’ve played it, and after seeing it firsthand, I get why. It’s one of those tracks where you walk off knowing exactly where you messed up, but still want another crack at it.
The finishing hole is one of the best parts. It wraps back in by the pool area with everything overlooking the course. Really cool way to end a round.
Practice Facilities: Quietly One of the Best Parts
After the round, we grabbed lunch at the Cap Rock pool, then got a tour of their main practice facility, Cap Rock Golf Academy.
This place is legit.
It’s a 3,000 sq ft facility partnered with Callaway Golf, and you can tell right away it’s built for serious improvement but still fun to be around. You’ve got Topgolf-style bays, TrackMan simulators, short game areas, and everything you’d want whether you’re grinding or just messing around.
They also run a bunch of different golf academies and workshops out of here, so it’s not just a range you hit balls at. It’s actually a place you could spend real time getting better.
Whitewater: Not Your Typical “Mini Golf”
Later that afternoon, we headed over to Whitewater 360 Sports Club to check out their putting course.
This isn’t your typical mini putt.
It’s a full 18-hole natural grass putting course that loops around the property. First time I’ve played something like that, and honestly, it rolled better than some actual greens.
You can play it at night too, but I’d definitely recommend doing it during the day. It looked like it’d be tough to see some of the breaks once it gets dark.
Saturday Night: Simple but Perfect
We kept it simple that night.
They had a private s’mores setup back near the hotel lobby, and it ended up being the perfect way to wind down. Nothing crazy, just a good hang after a full day.
Sunday: Slick Rock to Close It Out
Sunday morning we checked out and headed over to Slick Rock Golf Course for one last round.
This is the only course that’s a bit separate from the others, and it plays different too.
Out of the three, it’s definitely the most open and forgiving. Wider fairways, a little more room off the tee, but still a solid track.
Ended up playing my best round of the trip and shot 2 under, which is always a nice way to finish.
Grabbed lunch after at the Slick Rock Grill & Bar and wrapped up the trip from there.
Final Thoughts
This is one of those spots that just works.
For anyone in Texas, it’s an easy weekend getaway that feels like a full trip without having to travel far. And even if you’re coming from out of state, it checks a lot of boxes. Golf, spa, food, lake views, and plenty to do outside of just playing.
We went in early January and had perfect weather. T-shirts by noon, light sweatshirts at night. That’s the beauty of a Texas golf resort. You can pretty much play year-round.
I’d actually love to get back out here in the summer too. With the pools and all the water activities, it would feel like a completely different trip.
