Big Easy Ranch: Texas’ Most Unique Golf Experience

The Quick Escape That Doesn’t Feel Like Texas

There aren’t many places where you can leave Houston in the morning and feel like you’re on a full-on destination golf trip an hour later, but that’s exactly what Big Easy Ranch is.

Tucked away in Columbus, just over an hour drive, this place sits on around 2,000 acres of rolling land that honestly doesn’t even feel like Texas when you’re out there.

We went out for a boys trip, and from the second you pull in, you realize this isn’t just a golf course. It’s a full experience.

A Little Backstory on the Place

Big Easy Ranch didn’t start as some massive golf destination right away.

Originally, it leaned more into the outdoor lifestyle — hunting, fishing, shooting — and had a par 3 course and practice facility before anything else.

Then golf exploded again, and they went all in.

They brought in architect Chet Williams to build their championship course, The Covey, which opened in 2023 and immediately started getting national recognition.

Now it’s one of the most talked about private golf experiences in Texas.

The Golf: Pure, Different, and Actually Fun

The golf out here is just… different.

The land has legit elevation changes, up to 80 feet in some spots, with creeks, waterfalls, and tree-lined holes that make every shot feel unique.

It’s one of those courses where you’re constantly pulling your phone out because every hole looks like it should be on a postcard.

And then you notice the details.

The Antler Tee Markers

This was one of my favorite small touches.

Actual antlers as tee markers. It sounds simple, but it fits the entire vibe of the property perfectly. It’s not trying to be overly polished or country club perfect. It leans into the ranch feel, and that’s what makes it stand out.

The Par 3 Course (And What’s Coming)

The short course, called The Antler, is already one of the more fun par 3 setups you’ll play.

It’s not your typical flat, quick loop. There’s elevation, waterfalls, and holes ranging from short wedges to legit mid irons.

But the crazy part is… they’re redoing it right now.

They started a full renovation in 2026 to bring it up to the same level as the main course, which says a lot considering how good it already is.

I’m already planning a trip back just to see what they do with it.

Eagle’s Nest: The Turn You Don’t Rush

The halfway house here, Eagle’s Nest, isn’t something you grab a quick snack and leave.

It’s a full stop.

Food, drinks, a place to actually sit and hang for a bit. It feels more like a lodge than a snack shack. On a boys trip, this ended up being one of those spots where the round kind of pauses and turns into a memory.

If you make your way up to the third story, you get one of the best views on the entire property. You can literally see the course stretch out in every direction, and it’s one of those spots you just stand there for a minute and take it in.

They also have a mini putting course right there, which turned into some competitive (and honestly heated) matches while we were hanging around. It’s the kind of setup that makes you want to stay longer than you probably should mid-round.

Comfort Stations Done Right

There are two comfort stations on the course, and they’re stocked.

Snacks, drinks, everything you need without ever feeling like you’re hunting something down mid-round.

It’s one of those details that separates a good course from a great experience. You’re never thinking about logistics, you’re just playing.

It’s Not Just Golf Out There

This is where Big Easy Ranch really separates itself.

Golf is just one part of it.

You’ve got:

  • Whitetail and exotic hunting

  • Wingshooting

  • Stocked fishing lakes with bass, redfish, even trout

  • Sporting clays and shooting facilities

It’s basically built for guys trips. You can wake up, play 18, fish in the afternoon, and be shooting clays before dinner.

There aren’t many places that offer that kind of mix.

Why This Trip Stuck With Me

Every golf trip has good courses.

But not every trip feels different.

Big Easy Ranch is one of those places where the experience sticks with you more than just the scorecard. It’s the combination of golf, the land, the details, and everything else going on around it.

And the best part is, it’s right in our backyard.

An hour from Houston, and it feels like you went somewhere completely different.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in Texas and you haven’t been out here yet, it needs to be on your list.

This isn’t just a round of golf. It’s a full experience, especially if you go out with a group.

We’ll definitely be back… especially once that par 3 renovation is finished.
